APPLICATION

  • When and where is the Call for enrolment to the master's study programmes published?

The Call for enrolment in master's study programmes is published every year (approximately in the month of March) on the website of the University of Ljubljana and on the faculty website. The call states the application deadlines and criteria for individual master's study programmes offered by faculties within the University of Ljubljana.

  • What are the enrolment conditions for individual master's study programmes of the University of Ljubljana?

The enrolment conditions for each study programme are published in the current Call for Enrolment.

  • What are the enrolment conditions for individual master's study programmes at FRI?

The enrolment conditions for the master's study programme Computer and Information Science – Computer and Information Science track and Data Science track as well as the master's study programme Multimedia are published on the faculty website (under each individual study programme) and in the Call for Enrolment.

  • Where is more information about the master's study programmes at FRI published?

More information about master's study programmes is available on the faculty website.

  • How do I submit an application?

In all application periods for enrolment, the candidate submits an application using an electronic form on the website of the eVŠ portal. The application can be submitted with a means of electronic identification of at least medium level of assurance (with a qualified digital certificate, smsPASS, electronic identity card), with an AAI account, or with a username and password through the SI PASS system, which operates within the framework of the State Trust Services Centre.

  • Until when is it possible to apply for the master's study programmes at FRI for the academic year 2026/2027?

For the master's study programmes Computer and Information Science – Computer and Information Science track and Data Science track as well as the master's study programme Multimedia, the application is submitted through the eVŠ portal until 30 June 2026. The application through the eVŠ portal is also submitted by students who are completing or have already completed undergraduate study at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. An application is considered timely if it has been completed and submitted by the announced deadline with a means of electronic identification, with an AAI account, or without a secure electronic signature (username and password) in eVŠ.

  • Do I have to send a signed application anywhere?

No. The electronic application is sufficient.

  • How do I know that the application for enrolment has been correctly submitted?

The candidate receives a confirmation notification that the application has been successfully submitted to the e-mail address that they entered in the application for enrolment.

  • Is it possible to submit multiple applications at the same time?

The number of applications to individual faculties of the University of Ljubljana is unlimited. A candidate can select at most three master's study programmes/tracks within a single application at a specific faculty. At the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, the candidate can submit only one application for enrolment, in which they can select at most three master's study programmes/tracks. The application and instructions for application are available at the eVŠ portal.

Example: The candidate, when submitting the application, selects the application period for the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana. Within this application, they select at most three study programmes/tracks. As a first wish, they choose the master's study programme Computer and Information Science – Computer and Information Science track, since they most wish to enrol in this study track. As the second wish, they choose the master's study programme Multimedia, and as the third wish, they choose the Data Science track.

Because they are also interested in certain master's study programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (the programmes Mathematics and Computer Science and Mathematics) and at the School of Economics and Business (the programmes Business Informatics, Entrepreneurship, and Economics with Data Analysis), they check the Call for Enrolment and which conditions they must meet for enrolment and until when the application for these study programmes/tracks is open in the eVŠ portal. The candidate finds that applications are currently open, therefore they open a new application through the eVŠ portal and select the application period for the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and in the application choose the programmes Mathematics and Computer Science and Mathematics and submit the application. Then they open another application through the eVŠ portal and select the application period of the School of Economics and Business. On the application they choose the programmes Business Informatics, Entrepreneurship, and Economics with Data Analysis. In each application, as the first wish, they choose the master's study programme for which they are most interested in.

  • What does it mean, that I can submit multiple applications and is the order of wishes in an individual application important?

The number of applications to individual faculties of the University of Ljubljana is unlimited. For the Faculty of Computer and Information Science candidates can submit only one application for enrolment through the eVŠ portal, in which they can choose at the most three master's study programmes/tracks. In the case the candidates chooses two or three master's study programmes/tracks, they will be placed in the first programme for which they meet all conditions.

Example 1: The candidate submits an application through the eVŠ portal where they select the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. Within the application, they have the option of three wishes. For the first wish they choose the programme Computer and Information Science, Data Science track (the programme and track in which they are most interested), as the second wish they choose the Computer and Information Science track, and as the third wish they choose the programme Multimedia. After the selection exam and the completion of submission of documentation, the candidate is ranked according to the wishes in the submitted application. The candidate has achieved low points within the selection criteria in the case of limited enrolment for admission to the Data Science track and the Computer and Information Science track, but he has enough points for the programme Multimedia. They are invited to enrol in the programme Multimedia.

Example 2: The candidate submits an application through the eVŠ portal where they select the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. Within the application, they have the option of three wishes. As the first and only wish, they choose the programme Multimedia. After the selection examination and the completion of submission of documentation, it is reviewed whether the candidate meets the criteria for enrolment within the selection criteria in the case of limited enrolment. Unfortunately, due to the surplus number of applicants for the programme Multimedia, they do not reach the required number of points for enrolment and are not admitted to the programme.

Example 3: The candidate submits an application through the eVŠ portal where they select the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. Within the application, they have the option of three wishes. As the first preference, they choose the programme Computer and Information Science, Computer and Information Science track (the programme and track in which they are most interested), as the second wish they choose the programme Multimedia, and as the third wish they choose the Data Science track. After the selection examination and the completion of submission of evidence, it is reviewed whether the candidate meets the criteria for enrolment within the selection criteria in the case of limited enrolment and they are ranked according to the preferences in the submitted application. The candidate has achieved too fewer points for the Computer and Information Science track but has enough points for the programme Multimedia. They are invited to enrol in the programme Multimedia. Because they are just below the threshold of points for possible enrolment in the Computer and Information Science track, they decide that they will wait two days in case any of the admitted candidates decides not to enrol in the Computer and Information Science track and thereby frees an enrolment place. If the place is not freed, they will enrol in the programme Multimedia.

  • What happens if I'm admitted to a master's study programme at a different faculty at the University of Ljubljana and they have a different enrolment deadline than FRI?

Example: The candidate submits an application through the eVŠ portal where they select the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (as the first wish they choose the Computer and Information Science track, as the wish they choose the programme Multimedia), and later they also submit an application to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, where as their only wish they choose the master's study programme Electrical Engineering. After the selection examination and the completion of submission of documentation, each faculty separately ranks the candidate according to the wishes in the submitted applications. Because at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering they complete the selection procedure earlier, they inform the candidate on 12 September that he has been admitted to the master's study programme Electrical Engineering and must enrol no later than 15 September. At the Faculty of Computer and Information Science the information on whether they have been admitted to the desired master's study programme will be available after 17 September. The candidate can decide to enrol in the master's study programme Electrical Engineering, but if after 17 September they are admitted and invited to enrol in the desired master's study programme or track at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, they enrol in that study programme and at the same time inform the Faculty of Electrical Engineering that they wish to cancel the enrolment in the first year of the master's study programme Electrical Engineering. Cancellation of enrolment is possible until 30 September, that is until the start of the new academic year of the year of study into which the candidate enrols in the month of September. The candidate cannot be enrolled in more than one master's study programme at the same time within regular enrolment in the first year.

  • What does the enrolment limitation in master's study programmes at FRI mean?

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available placements, announced in the Call for enrolment, a decision on the limitation of enrolment is adopted. Candidates are then selected according to the criteria and procedures for the selection of candidates in the case of enrolment limitation, as determined by each individual master's study programme/track. The conditions are published on the faculty website (under each individual master's study programme/track) and in the Call for Enrolment.

  • Where can I see the statistics on the number of applicants, points from the selection examination, and the average grade that candidates had to achieve for admission to master's  study programmes at FRI in the past five years?

Statistical records are not kept and the data is not available.

  • When will information be available about which master's study programmes at FRI have enrolment limitations and whether a selection exam will take place?

Information about enrolment limitations for the academic year 2026/2027 will be available after 6 July 2026. Candidates, who will submit their application on time and correctly, will be informed about the specifics of the selection exam by e-mail after 6 July 2026.

  • How do candidates who have graduated or will graduate from FRI apply for master's study programmes at FRI?

The procedure for candidates who have graduated or will graduate from FRI is the same as for all other candidates. They must submit an application through the eVŠ portal within the application deadline.

  • I missed the application for master's study programmes at FRI in the first application period. Will there be a second application period and how can I apply?

In the case of possible remaining available places for the academic year 2026/2027, information about the second application period will be published on the Faculty of Computer and Information Science website on 23 September 2026. The deadline for submitting applications through the eVŠ portal will be until and including 24 September 2026, and the deadline for submitting supporting documents will be until and including 27 September 2026.

  • Which documentation must graduates of FRI submit?

Graduates of FRI, who submit their application on time through the eVŠ portal (for the master's study programmes Computer Science and Informatics – track Computer and Information Science and or track Data Science and or the master's study programme Multimedia) don't need to submit additional documentation (Transcript of Records and Certificate of Graduation) because the faculty will obtain the data independently.

  • Which documentation must graduates of other faculties within the Republic of Slovenia submit?

Candidates who have already graduated from another faculty within the Republic of Slovenia, must submit (through the eVŠ portal) a copy of the Diploma Certificate (or a copy of Certificate of Graduation) and a copy of the Diploma Supplement (or Transcript of Records). Candidates, who will not yet have graduated by the date of submission of the documentation, must subsequently supplement their application in the eVŠ portal with a copy of a Certificate of Graduation and a copy of Transcript of Records.

  • By when must I graduate (or submit a Certificate of Graduation) in order to be included in the selection of candidates for enrolment in master's study programmes at FRI?

All candidates who submit an application for master's study programmes at FRI for the academic year 2026/2027 must graduate no later than 15 September 2026. Additional documentation is submitted through the eVŠ portal only by candidates who graduate at another faculty.

  • Is enrolment possible without previously graduating?

No. Without graduation, only application is possible. Only candidates who have graduated from an appropriate undergraduate study programme can enrol in master's study programmes at FRI.

  • Can graduates of pre-Bologna university study programs enrol in a Bologna master’s degree program at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science?

They may apply; however, in the event of enrollment they are required to pay tuition fees, as, in accordance with the Higher Education Act, as they have already attained an education that corresponds to Bologna master’s degree program. The amount of tuition for each academic year is specified in the price list.

  • How do applicants who graduated abroad apply to the call for enrollment?

Candidates who graduated abroad apply in the same way as candidates who graduated in Slovenia, namely through the eVŠ portal. A candidate who obtained a diploma abroad must, for enrollment in a master’s program, obtain a decision on the recognition of the education acquired abroad for the purpose of continuing studies. The procedure begins with the candidate’s application for study in Slovenia, which is submitted through the eVŠ portal. Instructions are also available on the university’s website.

SELECTION EXAM

  • How are the selection exams conducted at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science in the event that there are more applicants than available places?

  • Where can I arrange subsidized student meals (meal vouchers)?

Beneficiaries of subsidized student meals are all individuals with student status who are enrolled in higher vocational schools and higher education institutions in the Republic of Slovenia and who are not employed, do not carry out economic, professional, or agricultural activities or hold a managerial position as their sole or main occupation under the regulations governing health care and health insurance, and are not recipients of a pension, except for recipients of a survivor’s pension. Beneficiaries of subsidized student meals also include all students from foreign universities who carry out study obligations in the Republic of Slovenia within the framework of international exchange programs. The same conditions apply to them as to students enrolled in higher vocational schools and higher education institutions in the Republic of Slovenia.

To use the student meal system, all students who wish to use subsidized meals must complete and submit an online pre-registration. The entire procedure is described on the Student Nutrition website.

  • Where can I arrange subsidized transport?

  • I'm a non-Slovenian-speaking student and have just enrolled in the first year of a master’s program. Is there a Slovenian language course that I could attend?

Within the Leto plus (Year Plus) program, international students can learn Slovenian free of charge while also completing obligations in their study program. Leto plus is intended for full-time international students who are enrolling at the University of Ljubljana for the first time in first- or second-cycle study programs.

Students may use the credits obtained within the Leto plus module in the following ways: as external elective credits within their study program, in any year of study, if the study program offers the possibility of choosing external elective courses and if the faculty/academy in which they are enrolled recognizes Leto plus courses as external electives; or for a one-year extension of student status, exclusively after the first year of study (this right cannot be transferred to higher years). International students who, in their first year of study at the University of Ljubljana, obtain at least 30 ECTS credits—of which 6 ECTS credits are in Slovenian language courses (Slovenian as a Foreign Language – Lectorate 1 and Slovenian as a Foreign Language – Lectorate 2) and 24 ECTS credits in their study program—are entitled to a one-year extension of student status.

PARALLEL STUDY

  • When can a candidate enroll in parallel study?

Information related to parallel study is published on the University of Ljubljana’s website.

  • When does the application for enrollment in parallel study for FRI master’s programs take place?

APPLICATION FOR ENROLMENT IN A HIGHER YEAR (pursuant to transfer criteria or under conditions for accelerated

progression)

  • What is admission according to transfer criteria?

  • Does enrolling in a higher year of another study program mean that the student has used their right to change the study program or track?

Enrollment in a higher year of another study program means that the student has exercised the right to change the study program or track. This follows from point 27 of the first paragraph of Article 3 of the Higher Education Act (ZViS‑1), which stipulates that a change of study program is enrollment in the first or a higher year of another study program for obtaining a qualification or its track after the student has already been enrolled in a previous study program or track at the same level.

A student who enrolls in a higher year of another study program is entitled to an additional year in accordance with the second paragraph of Article 116 of ZViS‑1. To verify their rights, the student may contact: podpora-evs.mvzi@gov.si.

  • When does the application period for admission according to transfer criteria for FRI master’s programs take place?

ENROLMENT TO A HIGHER YEAR

  • How do I enroll in a higher year?

Instructions for enrollment in a higher year are published here.

REPEATING A YEAR

  • How many times can a student change their study program or track, and how many times can they repeat a year?

A student may change their study program/track (without limitation) and may repeat a year once at each level of study (second and third indents of Article 111 of ZViS‑1).

In accordance with the fifth paragraph of Article 137 of ZViS‑1, tuition is also charged to students even if they have not yet obtained an education corresponding to at least the level of education acquired through the study program in which they are enrolled, and they have already used the right from the second or third indent of the first paragraph of Article 111 of this Act, unless they enroll in a higher year than the one in which they were previously enrolled at the same level of study.

  • Can a student repeat the final year of study?

  • Can a student repeat a year if they did not have student status in the previous year (they interrupted their studies)?

Yes (within a period of two years). The Statute of the University of Ljubljana allows students, upon payment, to complete their obligations for up to two years after interrupting their studies without submitting a special request, so these students are considered, in terms of rights to complete study obligations exercised at UL, equal to students who did not interrupt their studies. For a person who paid tuition and lost student status, the provisions of Article 21 of the Rules on Contributions and Valuation of Costs at the University of Ljubljana for the academic year 2025/2026 (hereinafter: the Rules) apply. All first- and second-cycle students, regardless of whether they pay tuition or not, must pay for the 4th and 5th attempts at an exam. During the period in which they are allowed to complete obligations (2 years), they may therefore, in terms of their studies, find themselves in exactly the same situation as students who did not interrupt their studies: they can fulfill all requirements for progression to a higher year, meet the requirements for exceptional enrollment in a higher year, and meet the requirements for repeating a year, if the program allows it. During the period of completing obligations, a student may thus exercise the same study rights as a student who did not interrupt their studies, including the right to repeat a year. By paying tuition for a year, the student pays for completing all study obligations of the year in which they are enrolled and for which they have paid tuition, and for up to three attempts at each exam, or for up to two attempts at exams in doctoral studies.

Yes, it is possible to repeat the final year of study, which applies to all three levels of study; however, it is not possible to repeat the additional year.

  • How do I enroll in a repeated year?

Instructions for enrolling in a repeated year are published here.

EXTENSION OF THE STUDENT STATUS

  • Does an extended student status remain valid for the entire academic year, or does it end after completing the last exam?

Student status remains valid until the end of the academic year (until 30 September). However, after completing studies at the first or second cycle, a student may also renounce their student status.

  • When can student status be extended?

A student’s status may be extended for justified reasons (paragraph 3 of Article 116 of ZViS‑1) if: they do not complete a first- or second-cycle study program within 12 months after the end of the last semester; they do not complete a second-cycle study program within an integrated master’s program within 12 months after the end of the last semester; or they do not enroll in the next year during their studies.

Justified reasons (paragraph 2 of Article 126 of the Statute of the University of Ljubljana) include, for example: prolonged illness, exceptional family and social circumstances, parenthood, and the status of a student with special needs or special status. For international first-year students whose native language is not Slovenian, learning Slovenian may also be considered a justified reason. Student status may also be extended for justified reasons in the final year of study and during the additional year, which applies to all three levels of study as well as integrated master’s programs. Student status may be extended for justified reasons only if the student did not interrupt their studies in the previous year (or in the year in which they submit the application for extension).

  • How many times can student status be extended for justified reasons?

Student status may be extended only once and for a maximum of one academic year.

Female students who give birth during their studies and male students who become fathers during their studies are entitled to an extension of student status by one year for each child born.

  • Where do I submit a request for the extension of status in exceptional cases?

Information is available here.

CONTINUATION OF STUDIES AFTER INTERRUPTION

  • I interrupted my studies for several years. Can I continue them?

To continue their studies, the student must submit a request for continuation of studies through the STUDIS system. In case of difficulties with submission, they should contact the Student Affairs office.

MASTER’S THESIS

  • Where can I find more information about applying for and preparing the master’s thesis?

Frequently asked questions about the master’s thesis are available here.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL STATUS

  • Can students with special needs and students with special status complete their studies over a longer period of time?

The status of a student with special needs or a student with special status is also considered a justified reason under Article 116 of ZViS‑1. The status may be extended for justified reasons only once and for a maximum of one academic year.

  • How do I apply for athlete status or student status with special needs, and who is the coordinator for students with special needs?

Instructions are published here.

  • Who can apply for a status?

A student at any level of study may apply for different statuses that provide support and various accommodations in fulfilling study obligations. As determined by the Higher Education Act (ZViS‑1), the following students may obtain status:

Status of a student with special needs:

  • blind and partially sighted students or students with visual impairments,
  • deaf and hard-of-hearing students,
  • deafblind students,
  • students with speech and language disorders,
  • students with specific learning difficulties,
  • students with physical disabilities,
  • students with chronic illnesses,
  • students with autism spectrum disorders,
  • students with psychosocial difficulties.

Special status:

  • students categorized as athletes,
  • coaches,
  • recognized artists/cultural professionals,
  • students participating in (subject-specific) international competitions,
  • student parents until the child begins compulsory schooling.

WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PROGRAMME

  • I have decided that this study program is not for me. How do I withdraw?

The student submits a request for withdrawal through the system STUDIS.

  • Do I have to withdraw?

If you are not enrolling in another master’s study program at another faculty where a certificate of withdrawal is required, withdrawal is not necessary. In such a case, the faculty particularly advises against withdrawal if the student might later decide to continue their studies.

  • Do I lose student status on the day of withdrawal, or does it remain valid until the end of the academic year?

In accordance with Article 116 of ZViS‑1, student status ceases if the student withdraws from the study program. This means that on the day of withdrawal, the student loses student status and the rights associated with it (e.g. insurance, subsidized meals, student work via a student employment agency, etc.). A student also loses their status on the day of expulsion. However, a student does not lose their status if they transfer to another study program before the end of the academic year (paragraph 5 of Article 116 of ZViS‑1). In this case, the student should withdraw only after receiving the decision on the result of the selection procedure confirming admission to the new study program. For coordination of withdrawal and enrollment, the student should contact the student offices of both faculties.

  • Can a student complete a study program from which they withdrew in the past?

Yes, however, they must pay tuition (paragraph 7 of Article 137 of ZViS‑1). For all information regarding enrollment after withdrawal, the candidate should contact the faculty from which they withdrew.
