The first cohort of nearly 20 students from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's in Artificial Intelligence (EMAI) received their degree certificates on 2 September at a ceremonial event held at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona. The programme is coordinated by UPF, with the Faculty of Computer and Information Science of the University of Ljubljana also contributing content in the field of data science.
The event took place on the Ciutadella campus and was attended by UPF Rector Laia de Nadal, programme coordinator Vicenç Gómez (UPF), and academic directors from each partner university: Zoran Bosnić (University of Ljubljana), Lucia Cavallaro (Radboud University), and Massimo Mecella (Sapienza University).
Seventeen out of nineteen students who completed the two-year programme attended the graduation. Four graduates completed their master's theses at FRI, among whom Nikolay Kormushev from Bulgaria received the Cum Laude award for outstanding academic achievement.
The master's programme began in the 2023–2024 academic year and attracted students from all over the world with excellent academic records in fields such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, and related disciplines. All students complete the first year following a common curriculum, starting at UPF. The second year is completed at the university corresponding to their chosen specialisation, where they also have the opportunity to undertake an internship or final project in cooperation with one of the 17 EMAI-affiliated partners.
Each participating university offers a different specialisation: at UPF (Spain) the focus is on intelligent decision-making; at Sapienza University (Italy) on robotics; at Radboud University in Nijmegen (Netherlands) on cybersecurity; and at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) on data science.
